Alaska’s Original Heliskiing Operation

Over Twenty Years Atop Thompson Pass!

Alaska Backcountry Adventures has been at the epicenter of helicopter skiing and snowboarding in Alaska since the sport’s conception more than twenty years ago. Wisely planted roots…as is often the case in life, our company has benefitted from the foresight of the pioneering souls who established Alaska Backcountry Adventures and their exhaustive search for the best heliskiing location on the planet. They found it at atop Thompson Pass near Valdez, AK in the heart of the Chugach Range, home to Alaska Backcountry Adventures now for more than two decades.

Location, location, location. Alaska Backcountry Adventures base area was chosen twenty years ago given its perfect combination of reliable snowfall followed by predictably sunny skies. Although Valdez is known as “the snowiest place in North America”, the weather patterns twenty miles inland atop Thompson Pass avoid the marine effect and associated cloud cover that typically shut down other operations. Skiers and snowboarders enjoy the best of both worlds at ABA including some of the longest and most varied runs in the Chugach Range all within a smaller flight pattern. This allows us to log more vertical at a lower cost.

Most Qualified Guides & Pilots in the Industry!

Twenty years of successful operation in Alaska has resulted in a voluminous amount of experiential knowledge and a “sixth-sense” familiarity with the massive size and scope of the terrain found only in the Chugach Range. Our guides and pilots are hand-selected from the best in the business and most have more flight hours logged than the bald eagles hanging at the harbor. Their “other jobs” include avalanche forecasting and ski patrolling for premiere North American resorts. Their “other jobs” include avalanche forecasting and ski patrolling for premiere North American resorts such as Squaw Valley, Kirkwood, Jackson Hole, Snowbird, Alta, Bridger Bowl, and Alyeska just to name a few. In addition to EMT certifications, snow safety education and high angle rescue skills, you are going to find that without exception our guides love what they do and this infectious passion for powder is evident in their “powder-eating grins”

In fact, it is this universal passion for skiing powder combined with the uniquely Alaskan approaches to heliskiing that perhaps best defines the one-of-a-kind vibe that pervades Thompson Pass. Alaska Backcountry Adventures has long prided itself in providing the most affordable and flexible heliskiing options to accommodate almost any budget. We’ve seen and done it all. From ski bums calling a snow cave home to save every dime towards their turns to high-end film crews consisting of the world’s best athletes with Hollywood size budgets. No matter what someone’s background, we can guarantee you will sharing high-fives after the incomparable stoke of endless, bottomless turns in the Chugach. And this positive energy spills over in the form of raised glasses of Alaskan ale during sunset BBQs and howls of disbelief while starring at the Northern Lights around the bonfire.

New HooDoo Cirque Village Opening 2011!

And the great news is that the best heliskiing location on the planet just got better! In celebration of its recent 20th Anniversary, Alaska Backcountry Adventures is putting the finishing touches on an upgraded base facility and plans to officially open the new HooDoo Cirque Village for the 2011 season. For those who have flown with us previously and enjoyed the relaxed setting and breath-taking scenery afforded by our location atop Thompson Pass, this will in no way change with our renovations and expansions. ABA will continue to offer flexible, friendly, and affordable helicopter ski packages for every person on every budget. Our clients will still enjoy the most experienced guide staff in Alaska and the most soulful and friendly atmosphere of any helicopter ski base in the world. And our guests who love to travel in private motorhomes, or stay in hotels in town will always be welcome at ABA. The new HooDoo Cirque Village will simply add another option for guests at Alaska Backcountry Adventures and further the vision of our original owners/guides for the best heliskiing location on the planet!
