The RV Approach to AK

For many of the crews that return to ABA year after year, the RV ranks high on the list of recommended gear for the ultimate AK experience. Not only does the RV approach allow for optimum flexibility in your itinerary when responding to weather, it truly is the most affordable, comfortable option for a group of four to travel around Alaska (and four people is the magic number that fit inside a helicopter). Once parked atop Thompson Pass, the RV turns into a hotel, kitchen, bar, dance club, changing room and gear locker all in one handy location only steps away from the helicopter. No wonder motorhomes are the preferred vehicle choice of discriminating rockstars worldwide!.

Keep in mind that due to freezing concerns, RV rental companies do not allow the water or septic tanks to be used in the winter. This means no working shower or toilet in the RV (with a little retrofitting, the shower does make for a nice ski locker). Showers and restrooms are available at multiple locations near Thompson Pass and soon to be available as part of the new HooDoo Cirque Village (opening 2011). Plastic jugs work well for water storage and the kitchens are fully functional. Although ABA does not currently offer hookups, there is no charge for RV parking; in fact, it is highly encouraged and the views of the Worthington Glacier and surrounding Chugach peaks are hard to beat.

Other Uniquely Alaskan Diversions

Another advantage to choosing the RV approach for an Alaskan heliskiing vacation is that it allows guests to combine other uniquely Alaskan experiences as part of their ski or snowboard trip. The drive from Anchorage to Thompson Pass alone travels past many stunning backdrops including the Matanuska Valley, the Wrangell-St. Elias Range and the northern reaches of the Chugach Range. With a slight detour, guests can head up to Talkeetna for a flightseeing tour of Denali or swing south of Anchorage to sneak a peek at the bore tides of Turnagain Arm. Longer diversions can include fishing trips on the Kenai Peninsula or hot spring soaks above the Arctic Circle
